Basically with BPXWDYN we deal with a program which has been around for some time. Normally it is used to carry out assignments on the OMVS side for MVS files which are supposed to be processed under OMVS, and that without the necessity to move those data sets from MVS files to HFS files.

BPXWDYN is closely realated to ALLOCATE but it is not quite the same. Taking the risk of splitting hairs at this point we dare to mention that it is possible to execute assignments in a REXX program with BPXWDYN - even when this program was started under IRXJCL (ALLOC would not be possible in this case). On the MVS side BPXWDYN is a C program which usually resides on SYS1.LINKLIB.

Naturally the DD statements concerned could also be coded in the Job Control in case of fixed values - but what about dynamic assigments ?
